Green Cove Springs, FL – September 9, 2020 –Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded the Clay Education Foundation a $2000 grant to support youth literacy initiatives. This local grant award is part of more than $4 million in grants awarded this fall to nearly 850 nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools across the 46 states that Dollar General serves.
“We’re excited to once again partner with the Dollar General Literacy Foundation on bridging literacy gaps in Clay County. We know that schools and teachers cannot do it alone and that third-grade reading scores are indicative of long-term student success, both in and out of the classroom, and that’s why we launched the ‘Let’s Read, Clay’ program last year to target struggling early readers in hopes of breaking that cycle before it starts,” stated Makayla Buchanan, the Clay Education Foundation’s chief executive.
With just 63% of Clay County public school students achieving a level 3+ on the English Language Arts Assessment in 2018-2019, the Foundation has launched, “Let’s Read, Clay” to bridge literacy gaps and provide 773 students and 29 teachers the support they need to be successful readers, communicators, and writers during the 2020-2021 school year.
“This year, many teachers, libraries and literacy organizations are facing new challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer and Dollar General Literacy Foundation board member. “Despite the unprecedented obstacles, we admire the tremendous efforts and commitments from educators as they work to provide students with the tools they need to develop their literacy skills. We hope these funds will help support their plans to advance learning and deliver quality instruction in our hometown communities.”
